6. History of the Song w/ Text & Audio

1. I've been workin' on the railroad,
All the live long day.

I've been workin' on the railroad,
Just to pass the time away.
Don't you hear the whistle blowing?
Rise up so early in the morn.
Don't you hear the captain shouting
"Dinah, blow your horn?"

1. Ant asked Grasshopper to help her
carry some blades of grass,

Grasshopper just stared at Ant
and said,
"The Summer's just begun!"
Grasshopper just couldn't bear
to even think of work,
All she did was sing and chirp
while the grass grew green and long.

Read Aloud:
2. Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?

Chorus: ("Dinah, won't you blow.")

2. Grasshopper, Watch out!
Grasshopper, Watch out!
For the summer it will come and go!
Grasshopper, Watch out!
Grasshopper, Watch out!
For the summer it will come and go!

Sing Aloud:

3. Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah.
Someone's in the kitchen, I know.
Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah
Strumming on the old banjo.

3. Sure enough it soon was cold November
and Ant had food to eat,
But, Grasshopper was getting cold and skinny
while all the grass turned brown.

4. I've been workin' on the railroad,
All the live long day.
I've been workin' on the railroad,
Just to pass the time away.
Don't you hear the whistle blowing?
Rise up so early in the morn.
Don't you hear the captain shouting
"Dinah, blow your horn?"

(Return to singing with the melody of the song: "I've Been Working on the Railroad.")

4. In the dark and cold December
Grasshopper asked Ant for food,
Ant replied, "my Friend, I'm sorry,
but there's not enough food for two,
Even if I'd more to give you,
it'd never be enough,
For your appetite is larger
than any cook could meet!"

5. Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?

5. Grasshopper, so sorry!
Grasshopper, so sorry!
So sorry you must starve!
Grasshopper, so sorry!
Grasshopper, so sorry!
But next time look for work!
